Timor Leste Achieves Leprosy Elimination Target

People affected by leprosy in the audienceOn March 23, 2011, in the capital of Dili, Timorese President José Ramos-Horta announced at a memorial ceremony that his country had achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem. A small country of about one million people, Timor Leste achieved independence from Indonesia in 2002, but since then has had to grapple with political unrest which, in combination with the country’s complex geography, has been a considerable barrier to national health services. In spite of this, the national government has worked closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the effort to eliminate leprosy. The result has been that while in 2004 the country had a prevalence rate of 5.18 persons per 10,000, by December of last year the rate had plummeted to no more than 0.73 per 10,000.

In addition to the president, participants in the ceremony included Fernando Araujo Lasama, President of the National Parliament, Minister of Health Dr. Nelson Martins, and WHO-SEARO Deputy Director General Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh. Nippon Foundation Chairman Yohei Sasakawa, who also serves as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, was unable to attend due to aid work related to the March 11th earthquake and tsunami in Northeastern Japan. Executive director Tatsuya Tanami stood in his place.

In his address, President Ramos-Horta said directly to the people affected by leprosy attending the ceremony, “You have suffered for a long time. The government will do its utmost to see that people affected by leprosy, including family members and those who have been cured, can achieve a normal life.” In addition, the president expressed deep thanks to The Nippon Foundation, the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation and especially Yohei Sasakawa, for their work in realizing the elimination of leprosy in his country.
